Free Hearing Screenings this month

The University of Florida Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association will offer free hearing screenings during the next two weeks.

As part of the celebration of Better Hearing Month, the screenings will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on May 13, 18, 20 and 27. No appointment is necessary. The screenings will be done in the department’s offices at 1405 N.W. 13th St., Suites B and C.

“Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises; ear infections, trauma, or ear disease; harm to the inner ear and ear drum; illness or certain medications; and deterioration due to normal aging process,” said Dr. Michelle Colburn, clinical associate professor and director of clinical audiology for the department.

Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment, which may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices and hearing rehabilitation.

Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and ear buds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders hosted the 2009 G. Paul Moore Symposium on February 12th-13th, 2009 in Emerson Alumni Hall. Featured speakers inlcuded Dr. Peter Ramig, from the University of Colorado at Boulder discussing Stuttering Intervention with Children and Teens and Dr. Kathleen Pichora-Fuller, from the University of Toronto, speaking on “Normal” and Impaired Hearing and Cognition in Older Adults: From Diagnosis to Rehabilitation to Accessibility. The event was a huge success with nearly two hundred attendees.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders hosted the 2008 G. Paul Moore Symposium on February 14-15, 2008 in Emerson Alumni Hall. Featured speakers inlcuded Dr. Daniel Kempler of Emerson College, with a presentation on Communication Disorders in aging and Dr. Roger Ruth, University of Virginia, who presented on the topics of cochlear implants and tinnitus.

The Department of Communication Science and Disorders hosted the Annual meeting of the Florida Chapter of the Acoustical Society of America on September 21, 2006. Betsy Vinson presented "Oral vs Written Feedback in Clinical Education" at the annual meeting of Southeast University Clinical Educators on Sept 21-22 in Greensboro, NC.

The University of Florida, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders hosted a special program provided by Gallaudet and the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) on October 27-29, 2006. HLAA and Gallaudet, under its Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Hearing Enhancement (RERC), conducted a two day joint hearing assistive technology (HAT) program which helped consumers become more informed advocates on all types of hearing assistive technology in their geographic area.
