Rough Voice Quality Matching

Researchers: Cummings/Shrivastav

UF-IRB 2007-U-0450

This study investigates how people perceive rough voice quality.  Two vowel sounds will be presented to you through ear inserts.  You will be able to vary the ROUGHNESS of the second sound using a computer in order to make it equivalent with the first sound.  You will do this task for a number of pairs of sounds.  You may participate even if you have already participated in a similar study for us.

You will be paid for completing the experiment! ($5/hr and $10 for completion)

To participate in this experiment you must be a native-speaker of American English, have taken at least one class on voice disorders (undergrads who majored in CSD or LIN are eligible), and have normal hearing. If you have not taken a voice disorders course, but are still interested in participating, please email me for participation in a separate but similar study.

Estimated duration of experiment: 3   1-1.5 hour visits required

Participants will take place in various listening activities.

In order to participate, you must be a native speaker of American English, a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, or a native speaker of Spanish.  There are no age limitations. You must be have no history of  reading or learning disabilities. You cannot get both course credit and paid for this experiment.

Language Use in Adults with Dyslexia

Researchers:  Altmann/Lombardino

                                                                                                $15 + $20 to qualified subjects

UF-IRB: 2005-U-0969

This experiment examines language use in individuals with reading disability. This is a two-step study. First, you will complete a 2 hour evaluation and if dyslexia is confirmed, you will come back for the 2 hour experimental portion of the study. In the experimental portion, you will be asked to complete several memory and vocabulary tasks, make up sentences, and understand sentences.  This study will help us understand how dyslexia continues to affect language use in adults.

Estimated duration of Experiment:  2 2-hour sessions                     Subjects needed: 15

Location of experiment:   Speech & Hearing Clinic (4th floor of Dauer) and Dauer 50

Language Use in Spanish/English Bilingual Individuals

Researchers:  Edmonds

                                                                                                $40 to qualified subjects

UF-IRB: 2006-U-0459

The overall goal of this experiment is to design a treatment for Spanish/English bilingual individuals who have had a stroke which causes language difficulties in both languages.

In order to develop this treatment, non-neurologically damaged Spanish/English bilinguals are needed to perform a number of language tasks such as naming pictures and producing sentences so that we have a better idea of the range of bilingual abilities. As long as you are functional in English and Spanish is most situations, then you may qualify. Tasks are primarily speaking and listening. No writing is required.

Qualifications for participants:  Age 18+, right-handed, bilingual in Spanish/English (‘functional’ in English and Spanish in most cases). No history of neurological diagnosis or injury. Must have lived in the U.S. for at least last 2 years.

Estimated duration of Experiment:  2 2-hour sessions                     Subjects needed: 50

Location of experiment:   Dauer 56
