ASL 1110 -- American Sign Language 1. Credits: 3. This course and its sequel, ASL 1120 and ASL 1130, includes basic vocabulary, syntax of ASL and an introduction to Deaf Culture. In this class, you will be able to sign a paragraph in ASL to your classmates. Contact hours and silent meal hours (total of eight) required. *Replaces SPA 1612 starting Fall 2008
ASL 1120 -- American Sign Language 2. Credits: 3. Your ASL structure will include advanced components such as rhetoricals, conditionals, rank order indexing. You will work with a group and do a song project complete with props and costumes. Contact hours and silent meal hours (total of ten) required. *Replaces SPA 1613 starting Fall 2008
ASL 1130 -- American Sign Language 3. Credits: 3. You will examine sophisticated features such as reiterating, faceting, use of 3-D space. You will work with a group and do a story project complete with props and costumes. You will also experience the mechanics of interpreting vs. transliaterating and do a literature project "Bird of a Different Feather". Contact hours and silent meal hours (total of ten) required with different hours during Summer A only. *Replaces SPA 1614 starting Fall 2008
ASL 2250 -- Deaf Culture. Credit: 1. Demographics of the deaf population, language controversy, education controversy, rules of behavior, hearing losses, accessibility issues. This course will be taught via speech and signs so a prior knowledge of ASL is not required. Not intended for those who completed SPA 1612 and SPA 1613 as these courses already had Deaf Culture components.
SPA 1612 - American Sign Language 1. Credits: 4. This course and its sequel, SPA 1613, include basic vocabulary, syntax of ASL and the culture of the deaf.
SPA 1613 - American Sign Language 2. Credits: 4.
SPA 1614 - American Sign Language 3. Credits: 3. Prereq: SPA1612, SPA1613. This class is designed to enable students to maintain a dialogue with a native deaf speaker at a level equivalent to an intermediate level as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview.
SPA 2024 - Human Communication Dynamics. Credits: 3. An interdisciplinary course exploring a range of dynamic interactions in human communication. Topics will include pre- and post-natal communication, development of speech, parent/child communication, vocal/nonvocal communication, noise pollution and prosthetic devices. Normal and abnormal aspects of communication processes will be covered.
LIN 2210 - Phonetic Theory and Transcription. Credits: 4; Offered: F, S. An introduction to human speech production, classification, and transcription. Includes intensive training in the use of the International Phonetics Alphabet for transcribing American English.
SPA 3002 - Survey of Communication Disorders. Credits: 3. Basic principles of Speech Pathology and Audiology including consideration of the types of incidence, recognition and cause of speech, language and hearing disorders.
SPA 3011 - Speech Acoustics. Credits: 3; Offered: F, S; Pre/coreq: LIN2210. An introduction to scientific methodologies, physics of sound and elementary instrumentation related to human speech communication.
SPA 3032 - Fundamentals of Hearing. Credits: 3; Offered: F, S . Concepts and principles relevant to the normal hearing processes: acoustics, gross anatomy, psychophysical methods and basic subjective correlates of the auditory system.
SPA 3101 - Speech Anatomy & Physiology. Credits: 3; Offered: F, S; An introduction to elementary anatomy, physiology, and neurophysiology of the speaking mechanism.
SPA 4004 - Language Development. Credits: 3. Study of stages and processes of language acquisition in addition to diagnosis and treatment, and observation of language disorders in children.
SPA 4050 - Clinical Observations in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Credits: 2; Offered: S; Senior Year. Students participate in 25 hours of supervised clinical observations of diagnostic and remediation at the UF Speech and Hearing Clinic.
SPA 4104 - Neural Basis of Communication. Credits: 3; Offered: F, S. To provide students with a basic understanding of the structures and functions of the human nervous system and the neurological processes involved in communication and related functions and their disorders.
SPA 4250 - Introduction to Speech Disorders. Credits: 3; Offered: F; Pre/coreq: LIN2210 & SPA3101. This course addresses the following speech based disorders of communication: phonology motor speech; resonatory; voice and stuttering.
SPA 4302 - Audiometry and Hearing Disorders. Credits: 3; Offered: F; Prereq: SPA3032. Basic techniques in pure-tone and speech audiometry, measurements of middle-ear function and test interpretation. supervised clinical/laboratory experience in hearing testing.
SPA 4321 - Audiologic Rehabilitation. Credits: 3; Offered: S. Methods in auditory training and speechreading with hearing-impaired individuals and overview of aural rehabilitation.
SPA 4004 - Language Development. Credits: 3; Offered: F. Study of stages and processes of language acquisition in addition to diagnosis and treatment, and observation of language disorders in children.
SPA 4450 - Language Disorders. Credits: 3; Offered: S; Pre/coreq: SPA4004. This course addresses the following language based disorders of communication: specific language impairment in children; traumatic brain injury; aphasia; dementia.
SPA 4904 - Individual Study. Credits: 1 to 3, May be repeated with change of content up to a maximum of 6 credits. A project, reading or research course.
SPA 4931 - Honors in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Credits: 3; Preoreq: 3.2 overall GPA, 3.5 in the major and have completed (including current enrollment) 21 credits in the major. The design, implementation and reporting of an original research project by the student.

SPA 5051-Clinical Observation in Audiology (1) Prereq: For beginning graduate students in audiology. Opportunity to observe various phases of audiologic practice and to accumulate minimum of 15 hours of observation experience.
SPA 5102-Auditory Anatomy and Physiology (2) In-depth coverage of anatomy and physiology of auditory system to support understanding of auditory function in persons with healthy auditory mechanisms and those with specific disorders.
SPA 5106-Neurophysiology of Hearing (3; max: 6) Prereq: SPA 3032. Neuroanatomy of the auditory system, peripheral and central dynamics of the cochlea, electrophysiological response in the cochlea and in various levels of the auditory system.
SPA 5128-Speech Perception (2) Understanding speech perception in hearing-impaired and/or aged listeners. Auditory and cognitive hypotheses to explain speech-recognition deficits; and clinical and theoretical intervention strategies to alleviate perceptual deficits in these populations.

SPA 5315-Peripheral and Central Auditory Disorders (2) Understanding (1) anatomy and physiology of peripheral and central auditory mechanism, (2) etiology and pathology of peripheral and central hearing loss, and (3) audiological and otologic diagnosis/treatment of hearing loss.
